Great first career podium for Barry Baltus in Qatar!

Zelos press release: Second in Lusail, the young Zelos Black Knights driver launches his 2024 season on the podium, Belgium's first at a Grand Prix since 2015.

There will be a “before” and an “after” on March 10, 2024 for Barry Baltus. This Sunday, the 19-year-old rider took the first podium of his career in the Moto2 World Championship in Lusail. Sixth on the grid for the Qatar Grand Prix, the first of the season, he managed to move up to second place, even coming within 0.055s of victory.

Barry Baltus arrived in Qatar with full confidence thanks to intensive and diligent winter preparations. After a stormy day on Friday, the RW Idrofoglia Racing GP team driver picked up speed as Saturday's practice progressed. His sixth place on the grid already equaled his best qualifying in Moto2, but it still needed to be confirmed in the race.

Author of a good start, the Belgian inserted himself into the leading group and drove the first kilometers intelligently. Placed in sixth position, he started the machine and overtook his opponents one by one, until he climbed the podium and no one caught him. He finished second in Alonso Lopez's round.

This result is the best in the career of Barry Baltus, as well as of the RW Idrofoglia Racing GP team in Moto2. It is also a historic success for Belgium. He becomes the eighth Belgian to reach the Grand Prix podium after Didier de Radiguès, Julien van Zeebroeck, Lucio Pietroniro, Xavier Siméon, Livio Loi, Léon Martin and Auguste Goffin.

Barry Baltus (Zelos Black Knights driver): “It's an amazing feeling to be on the podium. I knew I had potential, but everything had to come together and we worked really hard on it. I felt really strong in the race, especially when braking. I was able to do a lot of overtaking, and in the last laps I tried to stay calm and concentrated. The second is a great result and I'm really happy for me, for Belgium, for Zelos who has supported me for many years, for Jarn Janssen and the team, for the fans… Thank you all! Now we have to keep working to stay at this level for the next Grand Prix. »

Freddy Tacheny (CEO of Zelos): “What a magnificent performance! We feel very lucky for Barry, who has worked hard and deserves it so much. The progression is here and we go through all the stages together. The level of motorcycle Grand Prix is very high, to be among the fastest riders in the world is a dream come true! But now we have to be aware that this is just the beginning and we will have to confirm. The closer you are to the top, the harder it is. Let's keep a cool head for the future, but also enjoy this great moment together! Thank you to everyone who supported us over the years and helped make this possible. »
