Sometimes in life we have to make decisions, and these decisions shape us. Lily Allen told the Radio Times Podcast on Monday that she had to decide between music and her life as a mother when she had her two daughters, Ethel, 12, and Marnie, 11, with ex-husband Sam Cooper, from whom she was divorced in 2018.

The singer admits that this decision did not help the development of her professional life. “The children ruined my career. Despite everything, I love them and they complete me. But their birth reduced my popularity,” she said.

The 38-year-old British woman therefore wants to put the well-being of her offspring at the expense of her life as a star. “You can't have everything in life,” she insisted. In 2011, the ex-spouses deliberately left London to settle in the countryside, in order to find a place suitable for their children's education, away from the glare, the Daily Mail reports.

The artist even says that she is “irritated” by people who believe that family life and show business are complementary. “Some people choose their career over their children and that's their problem. But my parents were absent during my youth and I'm still scarred by them. I don't want to subject my own children to the same thing.”

The singer now lives in New York with her two daughters and her new husband, David Harbour, an actor in the “Stranger Things” series. She took a new turn in 2021, when she left music to go on stage. Lily also starred in a play called “2:22 A Ghost Story” for which she won the WhatsOnStage Award for Best Actress in a Female Role.
