Lily Allen talks candidly about how difficult it is to be a mother and a pop star

The British singer is still known today for her song smilebut she admits that she sacrificed her fate on the stage by choosing motherhood.

In 2006, when his song Smile appeared on the air, it was an instant success. Lily Allen was only 21 years old at the time, but her song became number one in the UK charts and with it became one of the most famous British singers. The success lasted for several years, and was especially repeated with the release of the album Fuck You in 2009. However, according to the singer, it could have lasted even longer if she had not decided to become a mother.

Juggling motherhood and career

Now 38-year-old Lily Allen has two daughters born from the union with her ex-husband Sam Cooper. Ethel Mary was born in 2011 and Marnie Rose in 2013. “The children ruined my career,” she said on the Radio Times podcast, whose episode aired on March 12. She added: “I love them and they complete me, but as far as pop stars go, they've ruined everything.” Speaking about the sacrifice motherhood has taken on her career, the singer bucks the discourse that wants to make juggling the two easy. “It really annoys me when people say you can have it all because, frankly, you can't,” she said.

Despite the sincerity of these words, Lily Allen understands that her parental investment is also a matter of choice. The daughter of actor Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen, she admits that she was influenced by her own upbringing. “Some people choose their career over their children and that's their prerogative,” she said. But my parents were pretty absent when I was growing up, and I feel like that left some ugly scars that I don't want to repeat with mine.”
