Despite a particularly successful start to his career, this actor had a series of struggles and didn't get a major role for 19 years… until he returned to the forefront and won an Oscar in a sci-fi film that rounded it all off. Today it is more popular than ever.

Two iconic roles, and then nothing…

Unless you grew up in the 1980s and paid close attention to the names of the actors in your favorite movies at the time, the name Ke Huy Quan shouldn't mean much to you. However, in 1984 and 1985 he took on two of the most popular roles of the time in Hollywood and worked with two absolutely phenomenal directors: George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. Indeed, Ke Huy Quan began his acting career playing Half Moon in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Data in The Goonies. Suffice it to say that his energy and likability immediately caught the eye of viewers who still remember these characters 40 years later.

Unfortunately, after these two huge successes, Ke Huy Quan's career didn't really take off, far from it. Indeed, even if he still managed to act in several minor films and TV series such as California Man, Second Time Around or Be a Teacher and Shut Up, he never managed to return to the forefront. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor admitted that opportunities have become rarer since his work in The Goonies and Indiana Jones. Sometimes he had to wait more than a year and a half before he got a new opportunity, and it was often for smaller projects. Eventually, Ke Huy Quan decided to quit and take a different path by becoming a stunt coordinator and then an assistant director, two shadowy jobs that still allowed him to stay in the industry.

…until the triumphant return to the front

19 years after his last role as an actor, Ke Huy Quan still tried again and was finally cast in Ohana or Hidden Treasure. Obviously, it wasn't exactly the movie of the century… but it might have been just what he needed before his triumphant return to the limelight. Indeed, barely a year after returning as an actor, Ke Huy Quan landed the lead role in the science fiction film Everything Everywhere at Once directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. This name should mean something to you, since it is a movie that won 7 Oscars in 2022, including Best Picture and Best Director. Even better, Ke Huy Quan walked away with his own statuette as his role won him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

And if you thought that his career would be empty for a moment like in the eighties, everything says that it won't be like that! Indeed, very soon after the release of Everything Everywhere All at Once, Ke Huy Quan received a call from Kevin Feige himself. The latter then asked him to join the MCU playing Ouroboros, a Loki character you may have seen in Season 2. Speaking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor said:

When (Everything Everywhere All at Once) came out, the first call I got was from Kevin Feige, who politely asked me if I wanted to join the MCU. I called Jonathan (Wang) and said, “You know what? Nobody wants to hire me except Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Wong Kar-wai, Daniels and Kevin Feige. It's amazing! 2022 is a year that I will always remember as one of the happiest in my life!

If we had to wait 40 years to see him return to his rightful place, everything seems to indicate that Ke Huy Quan doesn't intend to leave anytime soon! Thanks to his role in the MCU and the recognition he received for starring in Everything Everywhere All at Once, the actor could become one of the most popular of the moment. A nice revenge on life that proves that sometimes it's good to keep hope and try again, even decades later.
