Matt Damon has played with the greatest

Every generation has its favorite actors, and we have to admit that Matt Damon is certainly one of our most admired actors. It must be said that he played in particularly notable films by talented directors, and that he is often accompanied by other excellent actors and actresses. Recently, for example, he stood out in Oppenheimer, a film directed by Christopher Nolan with Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh and Rami Malek, to name a few. At the same time, this film won the most Oscars in recent times, as it walked away with as many as 7 statuettes.

But Matt Damon's career is not limited to this 2023 movie, far from it. Indeed, we saw him in Saving Private Ryan (Steven Spielberg), The Legend of Bagger Vance (with Will Smith), Ocean's Eleven (with George Clooney), The Dead (Martin Scorsese), Invictus (Clint Eastwood), Interstellar (with Matthew McConaughey) or Alone on Mars (Ridley Scott), among others. However, despite these absolutely impressive results, Matt Damon has never won an Oscar for Best Actor. He was indeed nominated in this category for Will Hunting, Invictus and Alone on Mars, but never walked away with the prized statuette… at least as an actor.

This film changed his career forever

Did you know that Matt Damon actually started his career as a screenwriter? While fans of the American actor may know this, it's not information everyone knows. However, thanks to his writing, he managed to break into Hollywood. And more surprisingly, the script that helped him get noticed by the general public was also written by another now-famous actor: Ben Affleck. Indeed, when the two men were still only 27 and 25 years old respectively and were not at all famous in Hollywood, they teamed up to write the film that would change their lives forever: Will Hunting.

Released in 1997, Will Hunting is a drama film directed by Gus Van Sant and written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, who also star in the feature film. The late Robin Williams also had a supporting role in the film, mostly alongside Matt Damon. Already at that time, the American actor had a flair for knowing how to surround himself well since the rest of the cast consisted of Minnie Driver and Stellan SkarsgÄrd. Let us remind you that the film is about Will Hunting, a gifted young man who is a victim of abuse by his parents. He was then living alone in a dilapidated house in Boston, but spent his time learning all he could by reading many books. Impulsive and arrogant, he never managed to stand out in school or in his professional life, until he was finally noticed by a math professor at MIT where he works as a janitor. After an argument with a policeman, Will is sentenced to prison, but the professor manages to get him out on the condition that he works for him and is accompanied by a psychologist.

If you haven't seen this movie yet, know that it's easily the highest rated of Matt Damon's entire career on Rotten Tomatoes, and it's currently available on Netflix. In 1998, Will Hunting was nominated in no less than 9 different categories at the Oscars, including Best Original Screenplay, won by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, which put them on top from the very beginning of their Hollywood careers. Thanks to this film, Robin Williams won his only Oscar.
