Young people prefer starting their careers in a large group

Students and recent graduates express their expectations for the professional world. LVMH and L'Oréal are the most attractive companies to them.

The expectations and behaviors of people aged 18 to 30 in the world of work are changing, according to Ifop research for Epoka. Indeed, for their personal career, young people do not plan to commit themselves to the same company in the long term. In fact, only 7% plan to stay more than 5 years in the same company. For the beginning of their working life, the most valued model remains a large international group (for 83%), the private sector (for 58%), among young people, to the detriment of the public service.

In addition, the three criteria that most encourage young people to work in the company are compensation, working atmosphere and offered working conditions. Although corporate commitment and responsibility are less frequently mentioned, 80% of respondents believe that companies have a role to play in promoting social and economic inclusion.

Furthermore, according to young people, the key to the success of employer brand communication is transparency about the reality of the company, regularity of messages and video content (especially employees talking about their jobs). On the other hand, profile-based personalized communication is no longer relevant, nor is the use of modern technologies.

The most attractive sectors and companies

The research reveals the most attractive sectors and companies based on academic background. The five most attractive sectors for young people from business or management schools are luxury, consulting, banking, e-commerce and media. Their three favorite companies are LVMH, L'Oréal and Hermès.

The five most attractive sectors for young people from engineering schools are mechanical engineering, technology, energy, transport and health. Their three favorite companies are Thales, Dassault Aviation and EDF.

The five most attractive sectors for young university graduates are luxury, consulting, media, tourism and public institutions or institutions. Their three favorite companies are Decathlon, LVMH and L'Oréal.

Finally, the three favorite companies for Bac +2 are Apple, LVMH and L'Oréal.

Methodology: survey conducted online from October to December 2023 among approximately 15,000 students and graduates.
