In February 2024, a study published by the Association for Executive Employment (Apec) revealed the impact of maternity leave on the careers of female executives. After having a child, many people have difficulty restarting their professional careers, which is a result of sexism in the world of work. And at this level, it's about all professions, including culture. Lily Allen can attest to that.

What's going on with singer Lily Allen?

After huge success in the 2000s and early 2010s, Lily Allen disappeared from the airwaves. Her last album dates back to 2018, although she has held several concerts since then. The British singer turned and acted, through the series “Land of Dreams”. However, in an interview with the Radio Times Podcast, she believes that starting a family did not help her professional life. “My kids have ruined my career. I love them and they complete me, but as far as being a pop star, they've completely ruined it,” she says.

But don't take it as a criticism of his children, but of the music industry. “I get really drunk when people say you can have it all because, frankly, you can't,” she declares.

She gave up her career for the sake of her children

It is difficult to pursue a career in the entertainment industry while taking care of your children. Also, Lily Allen confirms that she herself decided to take a step back. Some people choose a career instead of their children and that is their prerogative, but my parents were absent a lot when I was a child, confides the singer.

An absence that weighed heavily on her, and which she decided not to impose on her own offspring, resulting from her relationship with her ex-partner Sam Cooper. “I feel like he left some ugly scars that I don't want to repeat on my children.” Indeed, Lily Allen's father, actor Keith Allen, left her mother, film producer Alison Owen, when the star was four years old. In an interview with Elle magazine, she confided: “My mother was 18 when she gave birth to my sister, and then, unfortunately for her, she married my father, and had my brother and me. He left school when I was four years old, so she had work to do. I think deep down I was mad at her for not being there. At the same time, I knew she had to do it or she wouldn't be able to raise us. I didn't want to be like her, I wanted to be a real mother.”
